To excel in the field of medicine, experts highly recommend candidates to opt for Doctor of Medicine or MD degree for specialization in post-graduation. Job of a MD is not easy, and thus, it is obvious that course of study will not be easy as well. MBBS degree holders can opt for MD as their course and they will then be offered ‘n’ number of specializations to choose from. These specializations include Radiotherapy, Anatomy and General Medicine. It must be noted by candidates that admission to MD course in most of the colleges is through National level Eligibility cum Entrance Test, commonly known as NEET PG, except for some colleges who do not come under the ambit of aforementioned exam. As per MCI, 220 medical colleges of the nation, both government and private, offer a total of 17950 seats for MD course. Course Details

Course duration of MD is 3 years and the curriculum of the said course id competency-based. It must be noted that as per PG Medical Regulation Act, 2000, Medical Council of India, the below mentioned points will also be followed while teaching the course at colleges: Learning – For all post graduate programs including MD, learning will be autonomous and self-directed

Assessment – Most essential and also the twin pillars for success of the

exam will be summative and formative assessments

Approach – The act recommends a modular approach in order to get a systemic exposure to the various sub-specialties which are related to the discipline.

Role of society – An important feature of the teaching plan is that the entire learning process will include such a learning process which will be ‘derived from’ or ‘targeted to’ the societal requirements. This will be done to expose students to activities which are community based

Eligibility Criteria

In order to pursue MD course, candidates are required to fulfill a set of eligibility conditions as specified by the authorities for admissions. These conditions are a mix of educational qualification, registration, internship requirement, etc. Also, candidates who seek admission through NEET PG will have to fulfill NEET PG eligibility criteria in order to qualify. Whereas those who seek admission through AIIMS, JIPMER or other institutes who do not accept NEET PG scores will have to fulfill institute-wise eligibility conditions.

Here we are listing the eligibility criteria of NEET PG for MD course

Degree – The candidate needs to hold MBBS degree or provisional MBBS pass certificate as recommended under Indian Medical Council Act 1956.

Registration – The candidate must possess permanent or provisional registration certificate issued by MCI or State Medical Council showing MBBS qualification.

Internship – The candidate also needs to have completed one year of

internship or must complete it on or before March 31 in the admission year.
The admission process of most of the medical institutes, for post graduate courses, functioning in the country is going to be based on the scores of NEET PG . National Board of Examinations (NBE) conducts.
NEET PG which is an eligibility cum entrance exam. The exam is conducted for admission to MS/MD/PG Diploma courses.

In the below given division MD seats will be filled after declaration of NEET PG result :

50% All India quota seats (all states except Jammu & Kashmir)

State quota seats. (including Jammu & Kashmir)

DNB Broad specialty courses

Armed Forces Medical Services Institutions

All Private Medical Colleges, Institutions & Universities/Deemed Universities

NEET PG scores will not be applicable for admissions to MD course in the below mentioned institutions:

JIPMER, Puducherry

PGIMER, Chandigarh

AIIMS, New Delhi and other AIIMS

NIMHANS, Bengaluru
It is commonly MBBS graduate’s dream to pursue MD or MS after completion of their graduation. In a nutshell, MBBS is a pre-level course whereas MD is an advanced level post-graduate course. Only those candidates who are MBBS degree holders can opt to choose from MD and MS. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is the full form of MBBS and it is a course that medical aspirants pursue after completion of their 10+2 and only if they qualify medical colleges’ entrance examinations.

MD course can be pursued by candidates after completing their MBBS degree. In this post graduate course aspirants can opt for any specialization that they wish to study and understand in depth. Some of these are Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, Radiotherapy, Pediatrics, Nuclear Medicine and Ophthalmology.
MBBS degree in colleges is taught for a duration of 50 months, this

includes mandatory one year rotational internship. However, MD specialization is taught for a duration of 3 years. Institutes such as AIIMS, PGIMER, and JIPMER do not accept NEET PG scores and conduct their own examinations for entrance.
